Earth Day 2013!

American Chemical Society 2013 Earth Day Theme

“Our Earth: Handle with Care!”

The 10th anniversary theme focuses on the general topics of water, air, plants/soil, and recycling.

Check out the American Chemical Society website (http://www.acs.org) to learn more about the upcoming Earth Day!

Want to get involved in Earth Day, but don't know what to do? Here are some ideas for you to get involved :)
-Plant a tree! Trees reduce greenhouse gases, clean pollutions, provides homes for a diversity of animal and plant life and secures soil from eroding.
-Visit a local recycling facility and learn about how you can reduce, reuse and recycle.
-Participate in an ACS annual environmental awareness campaign in your area. Learn how Chemists celebrate Earth Day.
-Plan an event with friends to go visit a local park, highway or beach and pick up litter.
-Go on a nature hike. Spend some time appreciating the beauty of our planet. Go to the park or nearby trail, or visit a new place every year on Earth Day.
-Ride your bike or walk instead of driving in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
-Engage others in conversations about your environmental concerns. Raise awareness about Earth Day!
-Learn more about the environment. Earth Day is a good opportunity to make a commitment to learning more about the environment.

SMACS General Meeting I - The Inside Scoop

TOP SECRET REPORT - SMACS GM I
OPERATING AGENT: 00WEB

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10th 2012 - 6pm
WG YOUNG HALL RM 2033
SMACS GM I

It was a dark and storrrrrrmy night! Well, no it wasn't stormy. It was barely dark out. But I guess technically it was at night.

It was a night, like any other night, with the sun beginning to set below the horizon under clear skies, that SMACS's devoted followers, attracted by the smell of free pizza and liquid nitrogen, flocked to Young Hall. I, your faithful correspondant, have disguised myself as a member of this secret society to bring you the full tale of its mysterious activities.

I arrived at approximately 5:50pm (arriving fashionably early so as to appear like a devoted member and throw off suspicion as to my true intentions) and helped myself to some pizza and refreshment as I awaited the subjects of my investigation to arrive.

The unsuspecting SMACS members awaiting news from their commanding officer.
I managed to avoid detection and blended into the crowd of followers, discretely collecting photos for future reference. Around 6:30pm, their commanding officer initiated the proceedings.

Dr. Kaner - Distringuished Professor of Chemistry and Material's Science

The Graduate Student Advisor Brian McVerry

We were introduced to the society's veteran scientists - the Distinguished Dr. Richard B. Kaner and graduate student Brian McVeery who serve as the SMACS advisors.

Officers also shared intel regarding SMACS's upcoming events including:

Member-Get-A-Member - if you'd like to sign up for membership in the national American Chemical Society, do it through the SMACS club. Members who refer others members will receive a Periodic Table of the Elements Blanket!

Exploring Your Universe - an event which means to enlighten (or convert) the younger grade school generation to the ways of science and study

Seaborg Symposium - a yearly conference which brings together some of chemistry's brightest minds so that they may share their research and discoveries

General Meetings II & III - another opportunity for members to hear about the current research endeavors of UCLA Professors and career advice from experienced individuals (and more opportunities for me to get a peak at the goings on in SMACS)

AND WHAT'S THIS?!?!?!

An easily accessible, newly made SMACS website with info on the club's officers, events, and tons of useful links and resources for chemistry enthusiasts!!! MUST CLICK! (I'll bet they'll put even more details about the events they'll be hosting on it.)

After the members were all inducted into the society, there came the initiaion ceremony...

LIQUID NITROGEN ICE CREAM MAKING!!!!!!

Double, double toil and trouble!
Smooth and creamy ice cream!
C-c-cold!
We were all treated to some freshly made, crystal free, smooth and creamy ice cream (and lots of fun watching the bubbling concotion being made). Delicious.

YUM!
All in all, an elighteningly delicious event. I wonder what other fun things this club has in store for us next time. Another chilling encounter with liquid nitrogen perhaps? :O
